Did you know the history of the Flag(s) of Somalia Did you know the history of the Flag(s) of Somalia?
We didn’t either — that’s why we dove deep and gathered everything we could find.

This was our very first blog post back in 2022, and it’s still our most-read piece today. 🇸🇴

Despite the many flags and conflicts on the ground, most Somalis share one belief: unity matters more. We're here to tell stories — not take sides. We shouldn't hide our differences and rich Somali cultures either.

Last week, I had the honor of presenting 3 RollUps Last week, I had the honor of presenting 3 RollUps at the Voices of Somalia event in Copenhagen, organized by the Somali Student Organizations (SSO) and @somali_youth4youth.

Here’s the first one, adapted for Instagram: Maps of Somalia 🗺️

Why maps? Because they tell the story of Somalia — its culture, geography, politics, and so much more.

Explore more maps on our website - See each state, city, village, town, district, and region of Somalia.

We try to use some for every blog article. Follow along for what’s next!

Somalia has one of the shortest life spans worldwi Somalia has one of the shortest life spans worldwide, and a big reason are INFECTIOUS DISEASES.
Why do we keep seeing such high numbers of people who are infected year after year? What's being done about it? What can WE do?
These are the questions we asked ourselves 5 months ago when we started this project. We interviewed 11 experts and had to rethink the issues multiple times.

Here we give you an overview of the issues. But we also wrote a blog article. Check out the full article on the website (link in bio).

Healthcare and surveillance has so much room for improvement which will equal more lives saved.

We will continue following through with this project in sha Allah, for now enjoy our overview here.

Do you know the four Somali Seasons? And where it Do you know the four Somali Seasons? And where it actually rains in the country?

Somalia has 4 seasons every year: Gu, Hagaa, Deyr and Jilaal. The two rainy seasons occur around spring (Gu) where most of the rain falls and autumn (Deyr) 🌦️. Hagaa is the windy, dry and hot season during the summer holidays ☀️. The other dry season is Jilaal.
When a rainy season has “failed” it means that there is a significant less rain during that rainy season.

So where does it rain the most?
The map shows the average yearly rainfall from 1984-2024.
Simply, the further you move away from the 'tip of the horn' in Bari, the more rain you will see. This means the most southern parts of the country will have the most rain, and therefore also be the most green, while the driest part are in the North-east where the climate is hot and dry. Each region have their benefits, and can be used differently.

CORRECTION: the correct way of spelling them in Somali are "Jiilaal, Gu', Xagaa, and Deyr".

Read about it in our latest post on the website: "The girl and the boy responsible for Somalia's floods and droughts".

This graph shows how much it has rained in Somalia This graph shows how much it has rained in Somalia over the past 20 years 🌧️.

🌍 It also highlights periods of droughts and floods. Besides the usual spring and autumn rainy seasons, there are larger forces influencing rainfall patterns—most notably, El Niño and La Niña (collectively known as ENSO). Interestingly, these phases closely align with periods of droughts or flooding 🔄 🌊.

📖 We delve deeper into the science behind this phenomenon in our latest article, "The Girl and the Boy Responsible for Somalia’s Floods and Droughts" (link in bio).

As shown, these phases occur in cycles and often lead to famine and catastrophes. Knowing this, we can ask: Is it possible to prepare for the next ENSO phase before it occurs? 🤔💡 Can we store enough water during El Niño periods to cover shortages in La Niña? 💧 And can we reduce the high death toll associated with each phase? Which smart solutions can we invest in, and how are other countries dealing with the same issue?

Have you ever wondered why Somalia experiences cyc Have you ever wondered why Somalia experiences cycles of droughts and floods? And why it only sometimes rains in Somalia? What led to over 42,000 deaths in the last drought a few years ago? And have you heard a drought might return soon?

We just published a blog article about this issue on the website (link in bio or
www.moresomalia.com/la-nina-el-nino/)

We break down the mechanisms of rain in Somalia as much as possible. It’s a technical subject, but an important one to know about when dealing with droughts/floods.

🌱 What challenges do they bring? 🌾 How can we prepare for them? 💡 What solutions can help mitigate their effects?

We broke it into 2 parts, this first part deals with the mechanisms of rain, floods and droughts. Next, we dive into some possible solutions.

A more climate-resilient Somalia is vital for any true progress to be made! 🇸🇴

Meritocracy—earning a job based on skills rather Meritocracy—earning a job based on skills rather than clan or family ties—and Unity—working together for common goals instead of each subclan acting alone—are two critical yet often missing elements in Somalia. Why does this matter? Because it undermines skilled labor and blocks growth opportunities. You can easily feel it here.
So, how do we address this? The roots lie in poverty and insecurity, and tackling these issues is the first step toward fostering a more equitable and united society.

One of the biggest problems in Somalia is the envi One of the biggest problems in Somalia is the environment. Deforestation is driving by the illegal (yet very active) charcoal production, and it is worsening the droughts. Here, we present a Somali study asking if the loss of Somalia's forest cover is human-driven or not.

Stopping the charcoal export is the part of the solution - the other part is to re-green the country. The government promised to plant 10 million trees a few years ago - we are yet to see any real progress. Meanwhile 1 group of Somalis (Bisha Cagaaran) is doing the actual work through volunteering.

Galkacyo is a unique city in Somalia, as the city Galkacyo is a unique city in Somalia, as the city is split by 2 Federal states. Two representatives from @ssoodense and @moresomalia met up to explore both parts of the city. Although you can travel the city without issues, there is a difference in numberplates, sim card providers, clan structure, governance (e.g. 2 mayors, police forces, political entities) etc. The city is relatively young but still among the largest in Somalia and has an interesting history.
We give your a little taste of the city's history and some drone shots so you can see it from above (muted on Instagram for copyright reasons). Enjoy!

Agriculture in Somalia is an important growing sec Agriculture in Somalia is an important growing sector. Why import vegetables from e.g. Ethiopia when we can supply it ourselves? And even export it in the long run? Why is the youth not partaking more in this promising lucrative sector?
We had an interview with a prominent Somali farmer, Mohamed Muse (Founder of Hecter Agri Tech), in order to learn some more. Check out the article on the website

Bali abaar is 8 km North of Galkacyo, Somalia.
People lived in a mixture of traditional and modern life. Despite not having much, there was running water, electricity, everyone had a phone and there was internet. Many also had solar. Essentials of 2024, but there are no good jobs.

It’s currently hagaa season in Somalia. This means central and northern Somalis is very windy, dry and a little hot. The wind was almost too strong to fly the drone, and it barely made it through 😆

As you can see, the federal states follow a similar division. Clans have important cultural and historic value in Somalia. Politically, it has worked against the Somali people's need for #unity. We need to transcend the clan based mind-set, and keep the clans for cultural purposes.
We plan on releasing a digital .shp file of the clan map soon, so people can explore the different clans themselves.

What if we broke the rules a little bit and mixed What if we broke the rules a little bit and mixed up the population? What if we went so far, that we disregarded the federal (clan) borders? It's time to talk about how to move away from the clan-mindset and its borders and reconsider how to achieve economic prosperity together as a union.

We present some #funnymaps here, to get this conversation going. Our borders should serve as no more than administrative divisions and people should mix freely in Somalia - whether it is for education, jobs, marriage, or simply personal preference. We should all be able to work together, across clan borders!

We've recently published a post about unity on Mor We've recently published a post about unity on MoreSomalia (link in bio).

We talk about the issues with the clan mentality, 4.5 system, and federalism. We argue how we can achieve unity by mixing up the population and promoting education and a stronger workforce.

This marks the 3 article in our prosperity series. The unity article is our criticism of the current state and ideas on how Somalia can unite. Our ideas might seem pushy, controversial or unrealistic to some, but it's important to address the clan mentality which is ruling and ruining the country. Go give it a read - we hope you enjoy! As always we have lots of maps!
